Its so good
We often take the piss out of the french and the baguette and for good reason. There is nothing more French than a baguette and in France the baguette is a serious business.
There are many different types of baguette (traditional, plain, brown etc) and they are used at different times for different things.
For cheese the baguette is sliced vertically, for breakfast its sliced horizontally and smothered in jam. A sandwich in France is always made with a baguette and i even had an hamburger in a baguette.
Not all baguettes are created equal. You have your supermarket type which are cheap and you can get these in a 6 pack. These are OK but the best baguettes are made by an artisan at a Boulangerie.
With a good baguette the outside is crisp and chewy, the inside dense and fluffy and the underside slightly less cooked than the top making it less crisp but more chewy.
They can be seriously good on their own and there has been a few occasions where I have bitten into one and I thought its the best bread I have ever eaten.
Often the baguette can be ordered from the camping ground for the pick up the next day. For around 1 euro its delivered fresh so I can be strap it onto the bike to be eaten later.
Lunch is served
I had a chat with the owner of 1 campground who said that he uses an artisan and the baguetes are very good so I ordered one. The next morning on the way out I picked up my baguette and tried some. I told the owner it was sensational. He said to me "I only eat good bread - you spend 20 cents more and get a good baguette and not a shit one.Its like wine i would rather drink 1L a week of good wine not 20L of shit wine"
Love it!!! Good food and wine is the key to success!! I love the pre ordering at the campground!
